Top Ten for Gladys Verhulst-Wild at Gent-Wevelgem

Gent-Wevelgem Women was on the calendar this Sunday. The race began symbolically in the historic city centre of Ypres, where, as in previous editions, no official start signal was given — out of respect for the victims of the First World War, the race is instead ceremonially "flagged off".
Over a distance of 169.1 kilometres, the peloton headed once again towards the exposed plains of De Moeren, before taking on the climbs in the second half of the race. The steepest side of the Kemmelberg served as the ultimate challenge. Along the route, monuments and memorials created a unique atmosphere in which cycling and history seamlessly intertwine.
With 56 kilometres to go, a powerful acceleration by Lotte Kopecky split the peloton, forcing a chase. Several attacks followed, but each time the bunch managed to regroup. The race eventually came down to a bunch sprint in the Vanackerestraat in Wevelgem.

The AG Insurance – Soudal riders rode a strong and committed race, constantly responding to attacks and staying in control. Gladys Verhulst-Wild managed to sprint to an impressive ninth place, with the victory going to Lorena Wiebes.
“I am happy but also disappointed, because I was blocked during my sprint. But I did my best and I’m really proud of my teammates. They did a really good job to come back, to chase, and I just want to say a big thank you to the team and staff,” said Gladys after the race.
Justine Ghekiere also looked back on a tough but beautiful day of racing: “I gave everything on the Kemmelberg, right to the limit – I was seeing stars. I really hoped that after all that effort, it wouldn’t end in a bunch sprint. I was hoping we could break away with a smaller group towards the finish. In the end, I’m satisfied that Gladys managed to sprint to a top ten spot.”
