On a super-hot day in the Giro Donne with temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius, Ally Wollaston kept a cool head and sprinted to a fifth place in a tricky final in the streets of Sassari, Sardinia.

“I do have mixed emotions about the result,” Ally said honestly. “I think I was capable of getting onto that podium. We had a plan as a team. The girls would do a lead-out and drop me off at two kilometers to go. They did that perfectly. I had a wheel I needed to stay on and I did that until the final meters when I hesitated maybe a second. I haven’t done too many bunch sprints in this peloton so I am trying to find my way still.

I am still very proud of myself and mostly of how the girls raced. We have one more day in the Giro Donne. We showed today we have the capabilities to get onto that podium. We have the momentum behind us and I am ready to tackle that final stage.”

Ally, Marthe, Ilse, Maud, Justine and Gaia prepare for that final stage from Sassari to Olbia on Sunday. It’s a hilly finale to a hard Giro Donne.
