Ally Wollaston runner-up in photo finish at Simac Ladies Tour
AG Insurance – Soudal rider Ally Wollaston came up just short, taking second place in a thrilling photo finish, with Barbara Guarischi claiming the victory.
The fourth stage of the Simac Ladies Tour took place in Ede, featuring a 118,2 kilometer course with three local circuits of 40 kilometer each. With 65 kilometer to go, Julia Borgström joined Teniel Campbell in the breakaway. After 15 kilometer, the second group merged with the escapees, resulting in three AG Insurance – Soudal riders in the lead group: Julia Borgström, Ilse Pluimers, and Ally Wollaston.
The breakaway group managed to stay ahead all the way to the finish line, despite attacks from the chasing group. As the stage neared its conclusion, the race evolved into a tense sprint.
“I have mixed feelings about the race today. On one hand, I'm really happy to be competing at this level again and to be on the podium in a World Tour race. I haven't been on the podium since the start of the year, so it's really nice to be back at this level of racing. On the other hand, I'm quite disappointed not to have been able to finish the job for the team. I had two teammates in the breakaway with me today who were pulling all day—they were amazing. So, I'm a bit sad not to take the win for them after such a great effort, but I think we can still be really happy to have had three riders in the front group. We really took the race on today, and I’m proud of the way we worked together as a team. I’ve had a few tough days recently, so it’s nice to have a strong performance and to finish the season with the team this way”, said Ally after the race.
