La Vuelta: Ghekiere in contention for the QOM jersey
The Belgian is also our team’s best placed rider in the overall ranking of the Spanish Grand Tour.
Winner of the best climber classification at both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France last season, Jutine Ghekiere hopes to be a protagonist in the fight for the same jersey also at the Vuelta a España Feminina, which takes place between 4-10 May.
A first step in this direction was made Monday afternoon, when Justine crested Alto de la Creu de L’Aragall – the only ascent on the course of stage two – in second place, which netted her eight points. The 28-year-old from Izegem sits in the same position in the climbers’ standings with plenty of opportunities still ahead in the next six stages. Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio took 4 points, as fourth, as a display of a strong collective performance by our AG Insurance - Soudal riders.
“It was a hard day, especially in the beginning, but I tried to go for the points and I am content with what I managed to do. It’s a good start to the week. The rain made the roads really dangerous and made for a hectic finale, so first and foremost we are happy about not losing time and coming home safely”, explained Justine in Sant Boi de Llobregat, where the day came to a conclusion. In the end all our riders could finish the second stage safe, after heavy rain in the final.
