“You feel it from kilometre one” – Marthe Goossens ahead of Ronde van Vlaanderen
At just 23 years old, Marthe Goossens is preparing to line up for her second Tour of Flanders, a race that holds a unique place in Belgian cycling culture. For the young rider, it’s not just another race on the calendar. It’s one filled with memories, emotion and a lot of motivation.
This will be your second Tour of Flanders. How does it feel to be back at the start?
“It will be my second Ronde. The first one was in 2022, so it’s been a while. I’m really looking forward to being back at the start with this team.
How did the recon go? Did it already give you that race feeling?
“The recon went really well. What stood out immediately was the number of people already out on the course. Even days before the race, there’s already a special atmosphere, so that promises a lot for Sunday.”
What does it mean for you, as a Belgian rider, to race the Tour of Flanders?
“As a Belgian, the Ronde is the race of the year. It’s something you grow up with. Even though I’ve only ridden it once, I still remember exactly how it felt. From kilometre one all the way to the finish, the atmosphere is just incredible. It really gives you goosebumps.”
Do you remember your first memories of the race?
“Yes, very clearly. I remember watching the race as a kid, during the time of Tom Boonen. It would be on TV from early in the morning, and my brother would be watching from the first minute. By the time the final approached, the whole family would be sitting together, waiting to see who would win. Those are really nice memories.”
You’re still young, but already building these experiences…
“Absolutely. Being able to ride the Ronde again is something special. And to be at the start with such a strong team, one that can really be part of the final, gives a lot of confidence and motivation.”
Do you have a favourite section or climb on the course?
“My favourite climb is definitely the Oude Kwaremont. Not just because of the climb itself, but especially because of the atmosphere. Riding onto that section is something really hard to describe. At that point in the race you’re almost empty, but just thinking about the crowd already puts a smile on my face. Hopefully we don’t end up with tinnitus afterwards! (Hahah)”
What would make your race on Sunday a success?
“I’ll be satisfied if I can help our team in the best possible way at the different key points of the Ronde van Vlaanderen course.”
