Last weekend, the Heusden-Zolder Velodrome hosted the Belgian Track Cycling Championships, where Luca Vierstraete and Shari Bossuyt delivered a series of strong performances. With multiple podium finishes, personal milestones and a national title, it proved to be a highly successful weekend.

Luca Vierstraete impresses with multiple podium finishes

Luca Vierstraete started the championships without clear podium expectations, but quickly exceeded them. In the kilometre time trial, she improved her personal time to 1:10.761, earning a bronze medal.

I didn’t expect to step onto the podium. My main goal was to improve my time, and I managed to do that, so this is a great reward,” Luca said.

She followed that up with a strong ride in the individual pursuit. Despite not improving her time and losing her Belgian record, Luca still claimed silver, stopping the clock at 4:39, behind Lotte Kopecky. The final was ended early after she was caught, but her podium place was already secured.

Later that day, Luca returned to the track for the madison, which proved especially demanding due to the tight race schedule. She delivered another solid performance and added a second silver medal, without losing a lap to the winning team.
The races followed each other very quickly, so the madison was really tough. Silver without losing a lap is a very nice result,” she reflected.

On the final day, Luca rounded off his championships with yet another silver medal, this time in the points race. In a small field of six riders, she stayed focused and consistent to complete an impressive medal tally.

Luca Vierstraete’s results:

  • 3rd place - Kilometre time trial
  • 2nd place - Individual pursuit
  • 2nd place - Madison
  • 2nd place - Points race

Shari Bossuyt crowned Belgian champion in the madison

Shari Bossuyt also enjoyed a successful championships. She finished fourth in the individual pursuit, a discipline she raced for the very first time.
It was my first-ever time racing the individual pursuit, so I’m really happy with this result,” Shari said.

The highlight came in the madison, where she teamed up with Lotte Kopecky. From the opening laps, the duo set a high pace, quickly distancing themselves from the competition and controlling the race throughout. Their dominant performance was rewarded with the Belgian national title.

With a national championship jersey and multiple podium finishes, the Belgian Track Championships in Heusden-Zolder will be remembered as a very successful weekend for both riders.
