Tough day for Sarah in La Vuelta Femenina
AG Insurance – Soudal’s Sarah Gigante secured a top fifteen place on the sixth stage of La Vuelta Femenina, finishing at La Laguna Negra. The route, starting in Tarazona, covered a distance of 132.1 kilometers and featured a steep 6.5km first-category ascent of the first category, before the final showdown.
Unfortunately, Sarah faced a tough moment early in the race, within the first twenty kilometers, as she suffered a crash and injured her ribs. She was immediately examined and found fit to continue. Despite this setback, the Tour Down Under winner showed tremendous determination, pushing hard to bridge the gap to the leading group of contenders in the final two kilometers. However, the incident and the energy expended took their toll on the Australian rider in the last kilometers, causing Sarah to lose ground as he finished 14th.
The victory went to Muzic Evita, followed closely by Demi Vollering and Yara Kastelijn. Currently, Sarah sits 13th in the general classification.
“I was really looking forward to today, the team protected me very well. Unfortunately, I got caught in an early crash in a rocky ditch. I didn't feel very good for the final climb. Hopefully, I can recover for Sunday’s stage”, said Sarah after the stage.
