Moolman-Pasio close to the top ten in Amstel Gold Race

Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio concluded the first of the Ardennes Classics as the best-placed AG Insurance – Soudal rider, coming home part of a strong group from where she sprinted to 11th. It was another solid display of the experienced South African in one of her favourite races, after 157 kilometers and four hard hours in the saddle.

The result she got on this relentless up-and-down course featuring 22 climbs was made more impressive by the fact that Ashleigh had to overcome a serious injury last year, which put career her in doubt, but showing an incredible determination and fighting spirit, she came back and was now among the best riders in Amstel Gold Race, which concluded with the victory of Mischa Bredewold (SD Work-Protime).

“I was happy to be at the front of the race and back to my normal self. It was a hectic race, and when that dangerous group formed, I dug deep and bridged across. Then, the penultimate time up the Cauberg I felt good and followed the others, but unfortunately, I lost the race in the downhill, when a couple of riders went away”, Ashleigh explained after the race. “On the other hand, when you have a big injury like the one I had last year you have some doubts if you can come back, but I was really determined to do it and I am grateful to the team for their support. Today’s result shows the level where I am at the moment and makes me look with confidence to the races of next week.”

Before the favourites took center stage, the day was animated by a strong breakaway featuring Gent-Wevelgem top ten finisher Gladys Verhulst-Wild, who put in a solid effort that helped the group stay clear until the penultimate lap of the race: “My plan was to be in the front. I jumped and joined the group that attacked right after the start and we did our best and rode full gas until the penultimate lap. I tried to help my teammates afterwards, but I was already on the limit. I am content to finish my Classics season like this and I wish the best of luck to the girls in Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège. It’s been a good Classics campaign. I am happy with finding my confidence and level again, something that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of this incredible team, to whom I want to say a big thank you.”
