Justine Ghekiere: On the Road to Flanders' Finest

Justine joined AG Insurance – Soudal Quick-Step in 2023 and is fully preparing for her second season in the team’s colors. With a mix of determination and fresh energy after the off-season, Justine has shared her experiences and insights about her training and her outlook on the Tour of Flanders.
During my off-season, I really take some time away from the bike. This year, after the season, I traveled to the United States with my girlfriend. It was fantastic, just completely away from everything. I also spend time with my family and friends, which I find extremely important. We go out for drinks or a nice meal, just enjoying the downtime.
Regarding my training to get in top shape for the next season, the build-up is crucial. I gradually start training more intensively and with more volume. Training camps abroad, like the recent one in Calpe, are essential in this regard. The altitude meters I clock there greatly help in improving my condition. I always plan these stages before my big goals, as I notice they really make a difference, especially in climbing.
My mental and physical preparation for the Spring Classics is intensive. Working with my teammates is crucial, especially in the Walloon Classics. We collaborate to position our lead rider, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, optimally for the finale. My role is often flexible; I help wherever I can, particularly in the final part of the race.
Last year’s Tour of Flanders was a mixed-feelings experience. The atmosphere is incomparable to other races, with the enthusiastic crowd and media attention. However, a standstill on the Koppenberg led to a disappointing result. I look forward to participating again next year and hope for a fair finale.
The Tour of Flanders is special because of the audience and unique challenges. It’s a long and tough race, often in colder conditions. The short, steep climbs and cobbles make it extra challenging.
What makes Flanders so special is the positioning in the run-in to the climbs. Last year, a large part of the peloton came to a standstill on the Koppenberg. Good positioning is therefore essential, as it can make the difference if you want to compete for the top spots.
My advice to young female cyclists dreaming of participating in the Spring Classics is to work on short, powerful efforts and not be afraid to defend your position. If these are your strong points, you can certainly dream of success in these races.
I'm looking forward to it!
