Winter cycling gear: Tips from AG Insurance – Soudal rider Nicole Steigenga

The cycling season may be off-season, but our riders’ preparations are in full swing. Nicole Steigenga, known for her strength and perseverance, looks forward to returning fully recovered to the start line in 2025 after a serious accident. In February 2023, she hit her head against a lamppost during the cobbled Le Samyn race in Wallonia while trying to avoid a crash. It’s been an intense recovery period, and although the Tour of Flanders – her ultimate goal – still seems far off, she is grateful to be riding outdoors again and that her cycling dream is still alive.
As Nicole resumes her winter training, she shares her best tips to stay warm, comfortable, and well-prepared during the colder months. With Castelli's reliable gear protecting her from head to toe against the elements, and the indispensable protection of Oakley glasses shielding her eyes from wind, cold, and debris, she’s ready for any chilly ride and all kinds of weather!
1. Layers, layers, layers
Nicole always begins with a key rule: better to be a bit too warm than too cold. In winter, she works with layers to perfectly regulate her temperature. “An extra windstopper and a warm base layer are essential,” Nicole explains. The windstopper is her favorite piece in winter, especially because she can remove it if it gets a bit warmer. “And if it’s damp, I use a gabba as an extra layer, which is ideal for keeping moisture out and staying warm.”
2. Windproof as a foundation
In winter, you often have to fight against wind and cold, especially in windy areas. Nicole knows how important it is to wear windproof clothing. “Where I live, it’s often windy in winter, so I choose pieces that block the wind. That prevents the sharp wind from cooling down my body.” For her, windproof clothing is essential to stay comfortable on the bike.
3. Overshoes: Small but essential
A simple yet essential tip from Nicole is to always wear good overshoes. “Since your feet don’t move much on the bike, they get cold quickly. And when they do, you can feel it in your legs, which isn’t pleasant.” Nicole finds that warm feet are key to a comfortable ride, even if the rest of the body is well covered.
4. Accessories: Gloves, hats, and leg warmers
In addition to windproof clothing and overshoes, she swears by a few essential accessories. “Overshoes, as well as gloves and a hat, are indispensable. A hat under the helmet keeps your head warm, and gloves ensure your hands stay warm so you can steer properly.” Her Oakley glasses also play an important role here: “They protect my eyes from the wind and cold, and keep dirt and moisture out of my view, making my ride much more comfortable. Small additions can make a world of difference on a long ride.”
Winter versus summer: The difference in clothing choices
In summer, Nicole opts for lightweight clothing that enhances her freedom of movement. “Light and airy, so I can move freely.” But in winter, it’s all about warmth and comfort, so she opts for as many layers as possible. She finds it ideal that in winter, she can wear extra layers and take something off during the ride if it gets a bit warmer.
